4th of July Quotes – As we wind down the last work day prior to Fourth of July weekend, there are a lot of thoughts racing through our minds. Most of these thoughts don’t stray too far from what’s always on our minds: women, bikinis, beer, grilled meat and cutting out of work an hour early. What are probably not as much of concerns are the liberties and freedoms that have given rise to our Fourth celebration to begin with. To provide a brief reprieve from your selfish, alpha-male ways, here are some quotes to get you thinking about what the Fourth really means. Feel free to reflect on a nugget of wisdom or two, share it as if it’s your own, then drown it in Patron, Amstel Light and smoke-infused beef until you forget you ever it.
Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”
Abraham Lincoln: “Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower: “Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirits of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed–else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die.”
Albert Camus: “Freedom is nothing but the chance to be better.”
Robert J. McCracken: “We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls.”
Thomas Paine: “Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, like men, undergo the fatigue of it.”
James G. Blaine: “ The United States is the only country with a known birthday.”
Aesop: “Better to starve than be a fat slave.”
Jimmy Carter: “The best way to enhance freedom in other lands is to demonstrate here that our democratic system is worthy of emulation.”
Paul Sweeney: “How often we fail to realize our good fortune in living in a country where happiness is more than a lack of tragedy.”
